In a landmark move to empower the next generation of professionals and strengthen human capital, Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has sponsored 103 students to pursue Medicine and Engineering across six prestigious universities in China.
At a farewell ceremony held on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, at the A-Class Event Centre in Abuja, Governor Zulum—represented by Hon. Ahmadu Jaha (Damboa/Gwoza/Chibok Federal Constituency)—reiterated the state's unwavering commitment to building an inclusive society through quality education and robust healthcare services.
This initiative aligns with the state’s 25-Year Development Plan, focusing on long-term investment in education and health. The governor congratulated the departing scholars, announcing that the state has committed nearly ₦1.5 billion annually to cover their tuition and living expenses.
Hon. Jaha emphasized that the students will enter a 10-year service bond post-graduation, ensuring that their knowledge is reinvested back into the development of Borno State.
Engr. Lawan Abba Wakilbe, Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, highlighted the government’s total scholarship investment of ₦11 billion since 2019, with ₦1.28 billion allocated specifically for this program. He also disclosed an additional $45,638 provided for medical insurance, residency permits, and health check-ups.
Engr. Wakilbe charged the students to focus on their studies, maintain discipline, and represent Borno State with excellence.

Anhui Medical University – 30 students
Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics – 12 students
Liaoning University of Technology – 20 students
Hefei University of Technology – 18 students
Xuzhou Medical University – 13 students
The students are scheduled to begin their journey on Thursday, October 31, 2024. This bold investment in youth marks yet another milestone in Governor Zulum’s mission to build a stronger, educated, and self-reliant Borno.
